Fact-Check: Conspiracy Theorists Claim Coca-Cola is Unhealthy

October 2, 2023

STATUS: DEBUNKED
Recently conspiracy theorists and far-right QAnon members have been posting inaccurate social media posts about how Coca-Cola is allegedly "bad for one's health."
Claims about the exact problems with Coca-Cola include the supposed toxicity of the harmless high-fructose corn syrup, the sugar content supposedly negatively impacting the gut, teeth and body, and other such unproven statements.
According to Coca-Cola spokesman Paed Schillingham, "There is absolutely no evidence that high-fructose is harmful at all or that high sugar content of drinks is unhealthy."
Many claim that drinking sparkling water, regular water, or kombucha, which also has high sugar content, is healthier than Coca-Cola. Schillingham says, "It's just another ploy by people to sell more 'alternative' drinks and profit off of cool-sounding products like kombucha. There is no scientific evidence that kombucha is any healthier than sodas. And the same applies to all other choices. It's more of a matter of opinion, not of health."
However, this surely will not stop conspiracy theorists from posting misinformation online.
