The Evil Inclination Vs. Emunah

October 26, 2023

As a human being, I like everybody else have an "evil inclination," e.g. the lusts, desires, and force of ungodliness and impurity within a person.
When it comes to any problem in life, as is written in "The Universal Garden of Emuna [faith]" by the holy Rabbi Shalom Arush, and really in the Hebrew Bible, the only true solution is to seek God. Indeed, in the Bible, it very often mentions that tribulations and troubles only come from prior transgressions, so return to God and pray to Him!
However, the evil inclination will tell a person to the contrary. Here I will give examples of what the evil inclination (EI) says (based partially in my own experience), versus true emunah/faith in God, regarding overcoming a problem, with some Biblical sources/examples:

EI: Why are you turning to God about your problem? You think God runs the whole world and cares about you!?!
Emunah: Surely God will answer one's truly sincere prayers! "The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, seeing the bad and the good." And "Praiseworthy is the man who walked not in the counsel of the wicked, and stood not in the session of sinners, and sat not in the session of scoffers, but his desire is in the Teaching (Torah) of the Lord, and in his Teaching he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree deeply rooted along divisions of water, that yields its fruit in its season and does not wither. Not so the wicked; rather they are like the chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not be vindicated in judgment, nor the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, while the way of the wicked will perish." And you think God created us for no reason!?!
EI: You can't just "pray away" all your problems! It takes real hard work to overcome problems, and God isn't just gonna take it all away...
Emunah: True. You cannot just pray and have your problems taken away. Also repentance must be involved. Prayer and repentance are real work. God is the one who sent the problem in the first place, so surely it will be He who decrees its end.
EI: Sounds like some fantasy world! This is just a silly fairy tale to make you feel good.
Emunah: The real fantasy world is that there are any other powers or gods than YH-WH. "I am the Lord; there is no other." "You shall have no other gods/powers before Me." Sounds like a fantasy to me...
EI: Ok, well God appointed certain forces to act over the world, but He's still their boss. But He gives them 'power.'
Emunah: Deism perchance? The Bible confirms God is intimately involved with man all the time, that He's not just some detatched CEO on vacation in Hawaii. He's an intimately involved King. He didn't just let "natural forces" play out with the city of S'dom for example; He always visited the righteousness or iniquity of Israel upon them and acted with them corresponding to their moral level. Indeed, these are only two Biblical examples.
EI: Ok, then has God ever actually answered any of your prayers?
Emunah: Yes..
EI: Maybe it was just coincidence..
Emunah: You're getting desperate.
EI: Fine. But you've already been praying for this problem, right? Why hasn't God answered it already??
Emunah: Glad to explain. For some things God expects more prayer than for others. And we pray not feeling at all "owed" anything from God, only asking for a free gift. God decides when we're worthy of the gift, but sometimes it takes a lot of prayer and repentance and turning to Him. And maybe it really isn't the best that you have what you're asking for anyway. God doesn't give you EVERYTHING you want. Also, didn't you say something about, quote, "It takes real hard work to overcome problems." So now you're contradicting yourself..
EI: You just pray to God because it makes you feel good, but it's all just fake.
Emunah: God has sent you to test me, as it is said, "For whom the Lord loves, he tests, and like a father [does] his son in whom he delights." I will not be afraid of your words, and I will be courageous, as it says, "Be strong and let your hearts take courage, all those who await for the Lord!"
EI: Surely you should see how nonsensical this whole "prayer" thing is! It's just a fantasy! won't you get it!!?
Emunah: You, evil inclination, are my personal "serpent" from the Garden of Eden, of which it is said, "Now the serpent was cunning, more than all of the beasts of the field that the Lord God had made." So I shall not be afraid.
EI: It's 2023; why are you still living in this unscientific world of 3000 years ago?? Prayer, that's just old nonsense."
Emunah: Rabbi Nachman of Breslev said 210 years ago, "Great atheism is coming to the world." It's already been predicted, you fool. Furthermore, it is mentioned, "the word that [God] had commanded to the thousandth generation," referring to His covenant with Avraham and His commands. It's not been 1000 generations yet...
EI: Come on! Just see a therapist/doctor/expert/insert-false-god-here and stop doing silly rituals!
Emunah: Ok, it looks like you've run out of arguments for now. When God will use you to test me again later, I know He will strengthen you, but for now, I've beaten you. Regarding the wickedness you are promoting here, it is said, "sin is lying, and to you is its longing, but you can conquer it." God has allowed me to conquer you for now. May He ever give me help! Amen!
